'Caring for the local environment'
Working to promote, develop, improve green spaces and the environment within the Churwell area alongside the local community, groups, schools and the council.
Multi Award Winning
Beck, Stream and Pond Maintenance
We regularly clear out the beck and stream in the area as well as the ponds. We build small dams to encourage the oxygenation of the water. Our planting schedule around the pond encourages wildlife to the area and provides habitats. We have pond dipping facilities for visitors to learn about pond life and identify things they find.
There are ongoing works to improve the footpaths in Churwell in conjunction with Morley Parks Dept and LCC Public Rights of Way. Many have been repaired and relaid with hardcore. The undegrowth is regularly cut back. Many stiles and disability gates have been installed to make the area more accessible.
Coppicing and woodland management is ongoing. Cutting back, felling and planting, is done under the guidance of LCC Forestry Dept. Any timber is then recycled for other projects such as fencing, hurdle making and den building. It is also made into log piles, bug hotels, bug and bee boxes, bird and bat boxes as well as hedgehog houses.
Drystone walls have been repaired, rebuilt and replaced. They provide habitats for plant, insects and small mammals that live in our woodland.
Events, Schools, Groups and Community Projects
The group have regularly organised events to attract local people to enjoy the area and take part in activities such as pond dipping, bug hunting and den building. Our Woodland Railway runs through a particularly scenic area of the woods. We provide activities for schools and youth groups to come along to the woods as part of the curriculum.
The group work closely with various wildlife organisations and LCC Park Rangers in completing wildlife surveys and reporting unusuall sightings.
The group do regular litter picks throughout the area an empty the dog poo bins on a weekly basis. They take great pride in keeping the area clean and tidy for visitors.
